What is Rubber Pipe
Rubber pipe also known as rubber hose or rubber piping, is made of natural and synthetic rubber and is used to circulate and transport liquids and gases for household and industrial uses. The natural or synthetic rubber materials used for the manufacture of rubber pipe make it extremely flexible, dependable, and resilient for use in hydraulic and pneumatic equipment as well as food processing and medical applications.Rubber pipe is often used for the safe transfer of solids, liquids as well as gasses due to the high resistance the material offers. Many types of rubber pipe also boast a wide temperature range, and are able to maintain their useful functions from temperatures as low as -65℃ to +70℃. Rubber pipe also offers superior tensile strength and tear resistance compared to plastic and solid pipe. This enables you to use it in a wider variety of applications without fear of deterioration to the pipe.
Advantages of Rubber Pipe
Durability
These pipe are designed to withstand extreme conditions, including high temperatures, harsh chemicals, and heavy machinery. This makes them a reliable choice for transferring liquids and gases in industrial processes.Rubber pipe have excellent abrasion resistance, meaning they can handle constant wear and tear without deteriorating quickly. This quality makes them ideal for use in industries where pipe are subject to continuous movement or exposed to rough surfaces.
Flexibility
Due to the nature of rubber, these pipe can bend and twist without breaking or kinking. This makes them ideal for navigating tight spaces and connecting different parts of machinery or equipment. The flexibility of rubber pipe also allows for easy installation and maintenance. They can be easily cut to the desired length and fitted with connectors or adapters, making it easier to customize them for specific applications.
Temperature resistance
Rubber pipe are highly resistant to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. This makes them suitable for use in a wide range of industries where fluids need to be transferred at various temperatures. For example, silicone rubber pipe are widely used in the food and beverage industry due to their ability to withstand high temperatures without altering the taste or quality of the products being transported.Rubber pipe are also resistant to temperature fluctuations, making them ideal for use in outdoor environments where temperatures can vary greatly throughout the day. This ensures that the pipe maintain their structural integrity and continue to function effectively over time.
Chemical resistance
In industrial settings, pipe are often exposed to various chemicals that can cause damage or deterioration. However, rubber pipe are highly resistant to most chemicals and can handle a wide range of corrosive fluids and gases. This makes them suitable for use in industries such as chemical processing, oil and gas, and agricultural spraying.
Types of Rubber Pipe
Food grade rubber pipe
The main concern of the food industry is tools that are safe and free of contaminants. Pipe used in the industry is required to follow very strict requirements to meet the standards of the food and drug administration (FDA), which specifies the types of materials that are permitted to be used for food handling products. As with other industries, food handling equipment has to be able to withstand high pressure and temperature conditions as well as the types of acids and chemicals used in food processing.
Medical grade rubber pipe
Much like food grade rubber pipe, there are strict guidelines for the production of medical grade rubber pipe, which imposes severe design and construction requirements regarding the machining of the pipe and its ability to resist contaminants, degradation from use with chemicals, thermal damage, but have biocompatibility. The main purpose of the standards is for the protection of the patient.
Conductive rubber pipe
Conductive rubber pipe is used to control the build up of static in electromagnetic interference (EMI) or radio frequency interference (RFI) shielding. It is made from natural or silicone rubber and conducts electricity by the distribution of carbon or other particles in the raw material prior to fabrication.Static electricity attracts dust that can cause sparks. Conductive rubber pipe reduces the friction that can ignite the dust. The pipe does not conduct electricity but moves or transports gases and liquids near electrically charged equipment.
Microbore rubber pipe
Microbore pipe is designed for use in the medical industry and comes in extremely small sizes. As with any products used for patient care, it has to meet fda requirements for sterility and materials. It is used for intravenous lines and placement in veins and arteries with strong wall construction to allow for free flow of liquids such as blood or drugs and is ultra-smooth, inert, and sterile. Microbore pipe for medical use meets the usp class vi biocompatible requirements for medical use.
Air rubber pipe
Air pipe moves pressurized air to actuators, valves, and tools. Extruding or mandrel methods can be used for the manufacture of air rubber pipe. It is constructed with an inner layer that is reinforced with fibers or a protective coating. When selecting air rubber pipe, the outside diameter (OD) determines the amount of pressure the pipe will be able to withstand. Small ods tend to choke air flow.
Chemical rubber pipe
Chemical rubber pipe is designed for the movement of hydraulic fluids, acids, and toxic substances. It is co-extruded such that it has an inner and outer layer. The key characteristics of chemical pipe is its flexibility, resistance to absorption, and smoothness.
Heat shrink rubber pipe
Heat shrink pipe is used to insulate, protect, and repair wires to extend their usefulness. Rubbers that are used for this process are abrasion, chemical, oil and acid resistant and able to withstand temperatures between -90℉ to 390℉. Heat shrink rubber pipe has a dielectric strength of 500 to 800 v/mil, which is the strength pipe can handle before it begins to breakdown. The higher the dielectric strength, the better the pipe is at preventing heat, electricity, or signal from dispersing.
Fabric reinforced
Fabric, cloth, or textile reinforced pipe has three parts, which are the reinforcing material, tube, and cover. The tube is made from synthetic rubber that is resistant to abrasion, corrosion, and oils, usually nbr. The reinforcing material is made from multiple layers of synthetic material that gives the pipe a very solid and firm structure. The fabric and reinforced pipe are covered with a second layer of synthetic rubber that has the same properties as the first layer. The construction, structure, and arrangement of the materials produces a highly durable and resilient pipe.
Non-reinforced rubber pipe
Non-reinforced rubber pipe is used for low pressure applications such as pneumatic machinery and the food industry. It is exceptionally flexible, lightweight, durable, and can be used as lay flat pipe. Non-reinforced pipe is customizable to fit any size application with custom ids and ods in multiple colors. The smooth even inner surface of the pipe maximizes flow and reduces or prevents buildup.
For added strength and stability, non-reinforced rubber pipe may be cloth inserted with one or more plies of cloth, such as polyester, nylon, or cotton. The application of cloth makes non-reinforced pipe suitable for processes involving oil, caustics, and hydrocarbons.
Application of Rubber Pipe
Rubber pipe in the auto industry is referred to as hose and pipe. It is used as fuel lines, radiator hoses, for supplying lubricants, and part of cooling systems. The smooth operation of automobiles depends on rubber pipe being in excellent condition. Since rubber pipe has a long life span and history of dependability, it is the most widely used method for movement of fluids in automobiles.
There are several varieties of rubber pipe used in agriculture. It is used to transfer grain, collect debris, and provide ventilation. Each application requires a specially designed pipe. Flexible pipe is used to move abrasive materials such as animal feed, grain, and manure. A major use for agricultural pipe is for ventilation to ensure proper airflow for livestock. Agriculture rubber pipe is required to be chemical resistant due to the wide variety of chemicals used for food production and feeding.
The special conditions of air transport require rubber pipe that can withstand harsh weather conditions, radical pressure changes, and wide temperature variances. Flexible pipe or hose is used in aircraft for fluid systems to connect moving parts with stationary ones in locations that are subject to vibrations. Additionally, rubber pipe is used as a connector between metal pipe.
To meet the required strength, durability, and reliability for aerospace, synthetic rubbers are used to manufacture aircraft rubber pipe, which include neoprene, butyl, and EPDM. The psi for aircraft pipe varies between 250 psi to 3000 psi.
Rubber pipe for food processing is extremely critical and has to be manufactured to meet the rigorous standards set by the FDA. One of necessary properties of food grade rubber pipe is the avoidance of kinking and the accumulation of contaminants or sediments to ensure easy flow and flushing. The walls of food grade rubber pipe are thick to prevent kinking, but the pipe is lightweight and flexible. Since food products produce acids and chemicals, food grade rubber pipe is resistant to those materials as well as alcohol and alkali. It is produced using a purity process to avoid the transfer of tastes and odors. Food grade rubber pipe is used with water, air, beverages, and dairy products.
There is a wide variety of pipe and hoses that are used for marine applications. Water hoses are used to pump engine cooling water, flush toilets, and cool air conditioning. Drainage hoses are found in the cockpit, sink, or shower and are resistant to kinks and abrasions. Drinking water hoses are made to FDA specifications to avoid bad tasting water. Other hoses include bilge pump and sanitation hoses, which have to be rugged for constant use.
Medical and pharmaceutical grade rubber pipe is normally produced using some form of synthetic rubber with silicone being the most common, which has very few compounding agents. The quality of medical and pharmaceutical grade rubber tubes includes having been tested as implantations in animals and humans, manufacturing conditions in adherence to FDA regulations, and exceptional quality control.
Inspection Standards for Rubber Pipe
1. Rubber pipe size measurement: Inner diameter, outer diameter, reinforcement layer outer diameter, wall thickness, concentricity, inner and outer rubber thickness, assembly inner diameter. The new national standard and ISO increased the length and measurement point marks and provided the measurement method of rubber pipe length without pipe joints and various pipe joints.
2. Hydraulic test and validation pressure test: Check whether the hose and assemblies will leak, deform and destroy under the validation pressure lasting for the 30s-60s. Pressure Deformation Test: Hold for 1 minute under specified pressure (working pressure verification pressure or other pressure below verification pressure), measure the length and outer diameter of the hose, twist angle and bending.
3.Blasting pressure test: Measure the pressure when the rubber hose bursts at the prescribed boosting speed. Leakage test: Preserve for 5 minutes under 70% static pressure of smaller blasting pressure, and check for leakage or damage repeatedly. Because water is often used in the test, the explosion pressure and leakage pressure measured at room temperature may be slightly lower than the actual viscosity of the liquid used.
1. Working pressure of the rubber pipe
When the rubber pipe is transporting materials, due to the flow rate of the material, the inner diameter of the rubber pipe, etc., it has to withstand some pressure, and this pressure is divided into positive pressure and negative pressure. Therefore, rubber hoses are generally divided into low pressure hoses and high pressure hoses.
For the rubber pipe, the rated working pressure we choose must be greater than the working pressure in actual use. Because once the pressure exceeds the maximum working pressure of the rubber pipe, it will cause damage to the rubber pipe, which may cause the rubber pipe to rupture or even serious fracture accidents.
2. The shape of the rubber pipe
The shape of the rubber pipe: conventional models are generally straight pipes, while other shapes of rubber pipes are collectively referred to as special-shaped pipes. A straight pipe is a rubber pipe with no bending in the entire pipe body and no significant change in the inner diameter.
Special-shaped pipes refer to rubber pipes other than straight pipes, such as reduced diameter pipes with varying inner diameters, flat bends with plane bends, and some bends with three-dimensional bends.
When we use the rubber pipe, we must choose the appropriate shape of the rubber pipe. Otherwise, if the rubber pipe is forcibly bent, the wall of the rubber pipe may be damaged. Moreover, the pressure at various places in the pipe will also change, which may exceed the range of the rated working pressure designed for the rubber pipe.
3. The length of the rubber pipe
As for the length of the rubber pipe, everyone knows that it cannot be used if the length is too short. However, some people think that it does not matter if the rubber pipe is too long. This is a wrong idea.
Excessively long rubber pipes will inevitably be bent when used. Even if the degree of bending can withstand the rubber pipe, the pressure on the bend of the pipe body will increase to a certain extent when conveying materials. Therefore, the working pressure that the rubber pipe can withstand in normal form may not be able to withstand it when it is bent.
The Production Process of Rubber Pipe
Raw material
The first step to produce rubber pipes is to prepare raw materials. While the materials include rubber, reinforce material, additive, etc. Select the proper formula to ensure that the pipe has good pressure, corrosion resistance and high temp resistance. Then the hose can fit your special work well.
01
Plastify and mixing
During the process, you need to mold the rubber raw material to make it easy to process. Then, the masticated rubber is mixed with other raw materials to fully mix the various materials to form a uniform mixture. This process is critical to the physical and chemical properties of the pipe.
02
Calender and vulcanize
The material after mixing will be calendered into sheets and vulcanized. This is to cause cross-linking reactions between rubber molecular chains to form rubber products with a stable structure. Factors such as temp, time and pressure during the process will affect the quality.
03
Process and shape
The vulcanized rubber sheet needs to be processed and shaped into the desired pipe shape. This process requires the use of molds to ensure accurate diameter and smooth surface.
04
Quality inspect and pack
After the production, it needs to test the quality of the hose. While this is to ensure that it can meet the requirement. These include the tests to appearance, size and other properties. After that, you need to pack the hose in roll or other styles. Then it can protect the hose from damage during storage and transportation.
05
How to Maintain Rubber Pipe
During use, first determine the nature of the medium that the rubber pipe will transport and whether the rubber pipe can bear this medium. For example, if it is necessary to transport oil, then the EPDM rubber pipe cannot be used, and the nitrile rubber pipe with oil resistance must be used. Also, during work, try to avoid dragging the rubber pipe, which will cause damage to the external layer of the rubber pipe. In addition, the working pressure should be within the limit range, otherwise it will cause damage to the material of the tube body. At the same time, it cannot work in humid air or water for a long time, which will also accelerate the aging of the rubber pipe.
During storage, first empty the inside of the rubber pipe, especially do not let corrosive acids and alkalis and other substances remain in it; do not excessively bend the rubber pipe. Although the rubber pipe has a certain toughness, it is also limited. If it exceeds the level it can bear, the service life of the rubber pipe will be greatly shortened. In addition, the storage environment should be dry and ventilated, and stored in a cool place. Water, light, temperature, etc. are one of the factors that cause rubber aging, and rubber pipes are also made of rubber, so they are equally applicable to rubber pipes.
During transportation, first avoid excessive bending of the rubber pipe, and do not let heavy objects press on the rubber pipe. In addition, do not mix pipes with acids and alkalis, organic solvents and other substances to prevent these substances from reacting chemically with rubber. Avoid placing the rubber pipe near sharp objects to prevent accidental scratches.
